Cisco 6509 with MSM Module Drops Some Packets Based on IP Address
I have two Catalyst 6509s with MultiSwitch Module (MSM) running Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP). One 6009 uses trunk link connected to 6509. Few servers are directly connected to the 6590, but there are many clients connected to a 6009. The servers are in one VLAN, while the clients are in another VLAN. Using sniffer, I can see that a 6509 will drop about five percent of packets for certain pair of client and server. After I changed the IP address of one problem client, that client will be having problem with another server.
The question is, why does the switch selectively drop packets bases on IP address pair?
I issued the reset system command. It did not solve the problem. Should I do cold reboot?
Re: Cisco 6509 with MSM Module Drops Some Packets Based on IP Ad
The MSM load-balances across four Gigabit connections across the back-plane of the 6500. The load-balancing is based on MAC-address. Due to the nature of the problem, one of the four Gigabit connections is not working properly.
To verify, execute the following commands and note any errors:
show epc status
show buffers (are there excessive AAL5 failures).
Otherwise, try replacing the MSM and see if the problem continues to occur.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
