Hello,
I have been trying to upgrade a couple of Cisco 831's to the latest IOS they can handle to put into a few of our branch offices to set up a VPN. I cannot for the life of me figure out which IOS to use, I am confused about the different trains. Any help figuring out which IOS to use and how to find out which one in the future would be great. Here is a output of my show version...

Hi Chris,
Here you go with the solution
http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp
then click on
Search by Software/Image Name/Product Code/Platform
and then put the complete name under image section and serach
Your major release is 12.2YN with feature set IP/FW 3DES
You can further upgrade in same major release with same feature set
Infact you are running one of the oldest major release
Infact what you can do is just click on
Search by Software/Image Name/Product Code/Platform
And then select the radio button for platform and from drop dwn select your 831 router and then you can search for major release and read the release notes on that major release and undrstand the caveats on each release.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

I am still confused. At the end of each release like 12.2YN, what does the YN stand for and how do I make sure when I move to the next major release that I have all the features I need?
Thanks!
