Can anyone tell me the easiset way to upgrade the ios on a cisco pix, is it the same as a normal switch/router etc, ie copy tftp flash ?

nope... thei pix uses FOS not IOS
Finesse is different to IOS but the upgrade is similar.
some models will require an additional amount of RAM
to achieve the required upgrade.

providing the pix needs to be upgraded is running a relatively new os, such as v5.1.1 or later. then the command "copy tftp flash" should do.
e.g.
pixfirewall#copy tftp flash
Address or name of remote host [127.0.0.1]? 172.18.125.3
Source file name [cdisk]?pix611.bin
copying tftp://172.18.125.3/pix611.bin to flash
[yes|no|again]?yes
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Received 2562048 bytes.
Erasing current image.
Writing 2469944 bytes of image.
