Our LES circuit that has just been installed doesnt need a router as the network is effectively not routed, but our remote sites all have a cisco pix on the end of the LES circuit, how does this work, can u put the gateway on the pc as the PIX ip address ? also can u put routes on a pix ?
You can put routes on a PIX and you can use the PIX as the default gateway for your PCs but keep in mind that the PIX is not a router. Meaning if you have more than one subnet on the Inside of the any of the PIX firewalls it will not route traffic between those subnets.
So, for the outside interfaces of your remote PIX FWs your provider should have given you a different default gateway for each. If they did, all PIX FWs will be able to reach each other. If the outside interface for each PIX is in the same subnet then you may need to put a L3 device on the outside of the main sites PIX.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
