ciscoppp vs ietfppp (ATM to FrameRelay)

I have a frame-relay conneciton on a cisco 2621 (12.2(5))., which is connected into a FRSM card on a frame-switch.

Internetworking on the switch is set to transparent mode.

I have an ATM conneciton on a cisco 7200 (12.2(5)), which is connected to the ATM card.

The link is fine; however I am trying to confiugre PPP multilink end-to-end, cisco documents suggest that an encapsulation type of aal5ppp should be available for IETF compliant PPP- however the only choice is ciscoppp. I'm assuming that PPP at the frame-end is ietf compliant?

Since the routers are not sucessfully completing ppp autentication I'm edging towards ciscoppp is incompatible with the ietfppp of the frame-end. Is there any place on the cisco web-site that gives details of what ciscoppp does better (or what it's advantages are over ietf compliant ppp). Are the two incompatible, or is it simply an error in my config somewhere?

Regards,

Adam.
