ciscoworks or hp openview

I work for a local ISP of about 5,000+ customers. We have varius servers all windows. Routers and no cisco switches. Two backbones. Any suggestions on which would be a better network monitor for an ISP, ciscoworks or hp openview.

If all you want is a monitor, I would suggest you look at "Whatsup Gold". Ciscoworks is great at what it does - but network monitoring is not its strength. HPOV may cost somewhat for what you desire.

Hope this helps

Thank for the reply. I checked out the whats up gold and it seems to be pretty much like IP Sentry which we are using now. I was looking for something more dealing with traffic flow and things like that.

For an Systems Administrator with an ISP that has 5000 customers, I am a bit surprised with your question.

Firstly I suggest you read up on the FCAPS model.

Secondly, I am a true believer in CiscoWorks's usefullness insofar it comes to the F and C in the FCAPS model. When it comes to monitoring, HP or What's Up Gold are great tools for the covering the A and a little bit of F in FCAPS.

Have a look at these links:

and

Good luck.

You could always try MRTG as well. It could be fit into either C or P depending on your view of those definitions.
