Ciscoworks question

How do I setup my Ciscoworks so that when it goes out and polls my devices (well over 600) that it lists the devices by the hostname of the device? All I get is a big list of ip's, which isn't helpful when trying to find a particular location quickly.

Are your devices in DNS and nslookup working in both direction?

how do I populate the dns without having to manually enter a record for each device? with over 700 devices, there is no way I am doing that. Can't the ciscoworks server display the routers by their configured host name (cisco host name, not dns host name)????

You can use an /etc/hosts file instead of DNS (it is /winnt/system32/drivers/etc/hosts on Win2000). You just put the IP address and hostname you want to use in the file.

What CiscoWorks application are you talking about? Campus Manager allows you to display the system name configured on the device. In RME, once you add the hosts file, you will have to reimport all of your devices (I suggest using the CSV import) using the hostname.
