By using the MAC addr of the CM the ISP could not only determine what type modem you are using (assuming you've not changed your MAC) but allow or disallow and place QOS based on this value. Example:

UBR#show cable modem

Interface Prim Online Timing Rec QoS CPE IP address MAC address

Sid State Offset Power

Cable2/0/U0 2 online 2290 -0.25 6 1 10.1.1.25 0050.7366.2223

Hope this helps you,

Don

thanks for the info. but can they allow service based on a particular model of a ubr router? for example allow a ubr925 but disallow a ubr924? somehow this is what is happening. and i'm curious how. it must be up higher then the mac, would this be threw SNMP? also what do they use to change your router configuration? and add ACLS, etc? also SNMP? thanks for the help!
