config ip address on catalyst 1900

one book said:

1900(config)#ip address 172.16.20.1 255.255.255.0

another book said:

1900(config)#int vlan 1

1900(config-if)#ip address 172.16.20.1 255.255.255.0

so are these configurations just same? or some different?

It is 1900(config)#ip address 172.16.20.1 255.255.255.0. I tried in the lab and it works while the interface VLAN does not
