configuring from CEF to dCEF

Hi,

I have a 7500 router with 4 VIP, and this device was running ip CEF, but the router had a level CPU Utilization near to 50%. Then CEF Distributed (dCEF) could be a good way for low the CPU Utilization. For enable the dCEF I configured ip cef distributed in the global configuration. But one VIP crashed and the router was 2 minutes freezed. Appearly by memory.

Finally the VIP restarted itself and the interfaces on the router down and up, then the CPU Uitlization low to 15%, in other word the dCEF is working fine.

1. I need to know if this was a nomal behaviour when change CEF to dCEF.

2. How can I be sure that router will not back to have any problem for this change ?

regards,

Carlos

It's not normal behaviour for a router to crash when you turn on dcef.... If you believe the crash to be because of a malloc failure, I would examine what you are sending to the vip card compared to the amount of memory on the vip card carefully, and make certain it's able to handle the rumber of routes you are passing down. Was there a traceback or other information captured by the vip when it crashed?

A vip crashinfo file could be decoded by the TAC folks to tell you exactly what the cause was, and possibly help figure out whether or not it's likely to happen again. Take a look in your bootflash (dir bootflash:, it should be), and see if there is a crashinfo file in there for the vip card.

And on the bootflash there is a crashinfo file about vip crash (slot 9).

This VIP has 32MB memory, and the device has 2 full BGP sessions and another session with 4K routes.

Do you recommend that I open the case in the TAC ?

regards,

Carlos

You're never going to fit full Internet routes in a 32MB vip--if you can upgrade the memory, I'd do that first, to 128Meg. I would guess that if you open a case with the TAC, you'll get the same answer.

:-)

Russ.W

Yes, when heppened this problem I remember about the memories installed on the VIP. I have a last question, there are 2 VIP with 32 MB, this VIPs will not run dCEF, What kind of switching will performance these card ? (fast, optimous, etc).

regards,

Carlos

You may be able to get distributed fast switching, but only on older code, since it's been removed from most of the code now. The best bet is to upgrade the memory on these vips.

Russ.W

If the router is rebooted and the dCEF is enable (by configuration) What will happend with these VIPs ? Will The VIP crash again ?

regards,

Carlos

Yes, they will, as soon as the full cef table is downloaded to them.

Russ.W

How Can I disable the dCEF by configuration on this VIPs ? This with the goal of avoid that these card crash.

Sorry--you can't... You either have dcef enabled on all the vips, or on none of the vips, within a single chassis. You could just run this 7500 with centralized cef altogether, which is what you're currently doing.

The RP multicasts the cef updates to each line card, there's no way to stop the vip from receiving the cef updates and acting on them. Otherwise you could have problems with inconsistent forwarding, out of order packets, and other problems.

Russ.W

OK, thanks for your asnwers and your time.

regards,

Carlos
