One of the customers of our ISP,has taken a 64 k leased line to our ISP POP.And I need to rate limit it to 48 K ,in the isp router. Can anyone pls help me in giving the configuration.Any url reference will b helpful..
There are a few methods to limit the rate of traffic. One is through CAR, or traffic policing. Another is with traffic shaping such as GTS. Policing will drop excess packets while shaping will attempt to send the packet, but will buffer the excess.
CAR can be configured with the rate-limit command.
rate-limit input 46000 2000 2000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
rate-limit output 46000 2000 2000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
Traffic shaping can be configured with the traffic-shape command.
A few things to note. Policing can apply to two way traffic on an interface, while shapping applies only to outbound traffic. Also, with the methods, cisco likes to have everything in intervals of 1000, that is why I selected the numbers I did, but you may tweak them to your specific needs. Here are some links of interest.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
