I have a router 1600 series, model no 1603 connected to the ISDN internetwork, presently it is connected to a standalone PC though the single 10baseT slot for the cable.

i want to conect the same to the switch so that the service on available on the ethernet(intranet) . so that other pcs can access the same. i have a novell netware 4.11 operating syatem presently running on the server. so how do i go about connecting the router to the switch ? do i use a crossover cable? what configuration has to be done on the client PC so that they can avail the service.

You should use a straight cable to connect to the switch.

Connect the PC's with straight cables as well and specify the IP adress of the router as the default gateway. That's all!

Sir, i have done as you had instructed. i connected the router to the switch using a straight cable. but now when i want to use the service i put in the gateway IP as that of the router. but since i had one machine using the service earlier it was using IP address 172.31.254.45 with subnet mask 255.255.255.252, now when i use this address only one machine still has access to the service, i want the other machines as well to access this service. so i do setup a subnet for this, or how do i go about it. if i have to setup a subnet then what are the valid subnet/IP host which i can assign to the machines. i want presently 5 machines to access the service.

as of now since the subnet mask is 255.255.255.252, i have at my disposal only 2 host addresses, ie 172.31.254.45 - for one host and 172.254.31.246 - for gateway.

thanking you.

Every time when you want to connect a eth port to the HUB, you need straight through cable as the HUB will cross connect its ports.

So ethernet connection between hub to pc is always using straight cable.

You wanted 5 machines to access the service, plus the router's

ethernet port, therefore, you need at least 6 ip adds.

You can use 255.255.255.248 as your subnet mask,

but you will only have exactly 6 hosts address:

Network: 172.31.254.40

Hosts : 172.31.254.41-46

But it would be better if you will have extra IPs, so you can try 255.255.255.240:

Network: 172.31.254.40

Hosts : 172.31.254.41-54 (Total = 14)

Hope this helps.
