Connection between C6509 and C2611

Hello,

I have problem on network connection between Cisco 6509 and Cisco 2611. On Cisco 6509, we have set several Vlans, while 2611 connects to the port of one vlan. Now they can not communicated with each other ( routing message can not be exchanged ).

Re: we have routing module installed in 6509 already, vlans can be routed within 6509's client connections.

Now we are suggested that to make the 2 device communicated, the connection line between them should be made to be a trunk.

Is that right? we are questioning the solution. As I have used Catalyst5000 before, connection is very simple without making the trunk between the switch and routers.

Its a pretty simple setup, but we'll need to know some troubleshooting details first before being able t narrow down the issue:

Some possible steps to check:

- Confirm that Layer-1 and Layer 2 connectivity is ok between the 2611 and 6500 via checking the [show int] from router and [show port] from switch outputs. Also, verify that speed and duplex settings match between devices.

- Check that the 6500 MSFC or MSM [interface vlan x] also has an up/up status and that the vlan 'x' matches the vlan configured under the corresponding 2611 switch port.

- Check that L3 addressing between the 2611 and MSFC/MSM interface are in the same subnet. (assuming IP connecivity) Check L3 connectivity between devices via ip ping.

- Check that routing protocol configs correspond between device

Please let us know the specific results of above if you still have problems.

It is true that if you are going to use VLANs that whatever interface you are going to use to connect the switch and the router that you must enable that port on the switch for trunking. On the router do not assign an IP address to the interface. You want to use subinterfaces & assign addresses to those for each VLAN you have respectively.

Another option would be to create a VLAN between the connection on the 6509 and and 2611. On the 2611 your default route should be out the serial interface, and verify that the router has a route back to the 6509.

Just to clarify the point: As you have indicated it is definately -not- a requirement to enable trunking on the 6500 switch port when connecting the 2611& a single VLAN between the MSFC/MSM vlan interface and the 2611.
