Connectivity problems at 10 mbps with the Catalyst 3548

I realise that there are NIC compatibility issues with some switches, and duplex / speed considerations, but I was wondering if anyone could shed light on a connectivity issue I am having?

When setting two hosts to 10 Mbps half duplex, and both switch ports to the same I am experiencing packet loss, between hosts when large files are transmitted. There are just two hosts on my switch. Yet when I connect the two hosts via a cross over cable there is none. I am running the latest version of IOS. The strange thing is I don't see any increase in counters highlighting problems with duplex, and if I use the old Bay 10 mps hub, there are no issues.

Have you tried full duplex? Full duplex will cut packet loss and numerous other packet related errors, 10mbps full duplex should work on just about ANY nic these days, in any case full duplex 10mbits is perferable to 100mbits half duplex.

Duplexing makes a lot of different, try 10/full!

with your crossover, are they running 10/full or 10/half?
