Connectivity Test

I have a router that does not have any connection to its Fast Ether ports yet. If the interface is up but the line is down should I be able to ping the address from a console connection? Additionally, is this the reason why the network the ethernet interface is on will not show up in the routing table?

you will not be able to ping unless you have line & line protocol up . The reason you have line up is that as soon as you plug a cable in to the ethernet port you get link . It will not show up in the routing table because the interface is up down

You can through a "no keepalive" on the interface to bring it to up/up state.

it still will not respond to ping with no keepalive

The router should respond with "no keepalive" command, if you ping from inside the router.

Also take a look at the routing table, the route will appear and can be advertised via a routing protocol to other routers (great for a lab set-up).
