We had a device on the lan with a back nic (receive side) that was sending out a continuous arp to an address on it's own subnet, but not seeing the arp response since it's receive circuitry was bad.
An 6509 with sup1/msfc1 is the default router for that subnet. The 6509 MSFC was hitting 99%CPU utilization during the arp storm, and we couldn't telnet to it, so all inter-vlan routing was down on the MSFC. Surprizingly a 7513 on the same subnet was hitting about 70% CPU utilization, and we could maintain a good telnet session to it.
Q). Does anyone know if there is a parameter other than broadcast supression on all ports of all switches that can minimize the impact that an arp storm has on the MSFC?
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
