CopperGig vs FiberGig

We are having a discussion on wether to order servers with Fiber or Copper nic cards. Some feel that if they are the same speed the performance is a wash.

We have also heard that copper is like a 2-lane highway, and fiber is like a 20-lane highway. What are the trade-offs between copper and Fiber?

Re: CopperGig vs FiberGig

There are a few benefits to fiber over copper. Fiber gets you a greater distance, and isn't subject to electromagnetic interference. As far as speed is concerned, I'd be more concerned with what the OS can handle. Some can't handle gigabit speeds. Fiber has the potential to handle greater speeds than copper using technologies like CWDM or DWDM, but GigE is GigE.
