CRC Errors and Reliabilty

Hi ,

Could anyone please confirm that CRC error are due to error in physical line only and why and when does Reliability of router port decreases ?

Hi there,

CRC errors can be caused due to a multitude of reasons the most common being the ones associated with the physical transmission medium itself.

In addition you could also investigate the follwing:

. Possible traffic policing on the Service provider network

. Noise, gain hits, or other transmission problems on the data-link equipment (such as a modem)

. A faulty or failing interface

. In case of wireless being used as the physical medium the probable causes increase by serveral fold.

Also it might be worthwhile to check for uni directional failures in case of a fibre link.

Most of the time, when intimated about a physical layer problem, your service provider will carry out loopback testing to ensure the reliablity of the line and give you a report on the same.
