Creating multiple vlans on a 3548 Switch

How do you create multiple vlans on a 3548 Switch. I understand to create a vlan you just enter"int vlan2" , then an ip address statement and no shut it. Well when I do this the vlan is created but it stays administrativly shut down. I tried assigning it to an interface but it still does not come up. Thanks for any help.

You made the common misstake of not configuring you vtp database.

on the prompt enter:

vlan database

vlan 2 name whatsinaname

apply

exit

Now your vlan will become active.

On an XL/2950 switches, interface VLAN is used for management purpose only and so you can have only one interface VLAN active. By default it's VLAN 1 and if you want VLAN 2 to be your management, shutdown VLAN 1 interface

Remember, this is a Layer 2 switch only and having multiple VLAN interfaces will not give you any benefit
