DB-9 Stands for?

Is there anybody knows that DB-9 is stands for what. I mean what is DB .

I think it stands for -

D shaped body with 9 pins. (If you look at the shape of the connector, its like the letter D)

Hi,

Taking a guess at it DB stands for decibel. I think this serial connection was first used as a COMM device for modems and things. The 9 is obviously for 9 pins and is similar to the db25. Of course it may also be something obscure like digital bridge.
