I think it stands for -

D shaped body with 9 pins. (If you look at the shape of the connector, its like the letter D)

Re: DB-9 Stands for?

Hi,

Taking a guess at it DB stands for decibel. I think this serial connection was first used as a COMM device for modems and things. The 9 is obviously for 9 pins and is similar to the db25. Of course it may also be something obscure like digital bridge.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about D-subminiature connector nomenclature can be found at the following link:

http://epl.meei.harvard.edu/Engineering/d-subminiature.html

dB or decibel is a unit of measure encountered in networking when talking about signal strength, attenuation, etc. in copper and fiber optic cable and transceivers.
