DC Power Supply multiple sources

We have a 6509E at our core with a pair of WS-DCD-2500W DC power supplies. It is located in our Telecom switchroom (different department from IT) and the Telecom folks have a new rectifier/battery bank and want to switch our 6509 to this new source.

The Telecom folks (FWIW, they run their own CLEC and have a long history in the telephone industry) want to power off our 6509 to make the power source change. They say that there is a sort of golden rule in telecom not to connect any equipment to two different DC supply systems.

Of course, to a sysadmin, this seemed a little silly. We have always connected our equipment to different UPSes on different circuits. As an electronics hobbyist, I cannot find a reason why leaving the 6509 powered on and moving one power supply at a time to the new DC source could be potentially dangerous.

What say yea? Thanks,
