delay problems with telnet??

I am having problems with telnet taking 5-15 seconds to connect to my gateway routers. The router is fine and functioning normal. I can telnet quickly to routers behind them no problem, and the cpu usage on the gateway routers is normal/low. This problem is pretty intermittent also.

Has anybody experienced this?? Any ideas, or places to look??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: delay problems with telnet??

You first should check the path to the router, to see how many hops you go through and whether or not they could pose a problem. Next, verify if it is the telnet conneciton that is the delay or the authentication that you may have enabled. Finally, on the router you could have a look at "debug telnet" and "debug ip tcp trans"; use msec timestamps (serv log deb da ms) to see the delta times between the SYN being received, etc. If you suspect there are login delays, "debug aaa authen" may be of help, too.

Re: delay problems with telnet??

Try setting "no ip domain-lookup" on the routers that you are telnetting to. I have seen this before where the router tries to reverse DNS the IP that is trying to reach it and has problems reaching its DNS servers...

(Also, if you are doing AAA, try turning it off, you may have connectivity issues to your AAA server)

P.S: Please post a reply when you have tried this. I am interested to know if this fixed it....

Re: delay problems with telnet??

I tried this, and it I am still having the problem. I am also not that worried about the AAA because I can't even type in my password, I never get prompted. Thanks for the help though.
