DHCP and DNS update to AD server

We have a requirement to use MSFCs or routers at each site to perform DHCP server functionality. By using HSRP between the routers, we hope to achieve backup DHCP server ability. My question is, when the router allocates an IP address to the client, does it send a DNS update back to the Active Directory server (use of the dns-server command?) This is so that the device, when it receives an IP address, has its name registered in DNS on the AD server.

Thanking you in advance.

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

I don't believe that the IOS will send a DNS update to the AD server on dhcp offer. The dns-server setting allows you to configure the dns server entries within the dhcp offer for the client. When the client logons onto the domain - it should then register on the AD DNS.

Hope this helps
