ip helper address was used on the subnet containing the dhcp server and this subnet began to work, but the other subnets did not respond. i am using microsofts nt4.0 dhcp server and wanting to use the cisco routers to pass the ip-address from a central location as opposed to a dhcp server on each subnet. is this practical or not, the ip relay agent sounded good but is probably a risky method of getting addresses consistantly....
You need the ip helper address configured on the interfaces where your hosts that need ip assignements are located. Point the helper at the DHCP server or the subnet on which it resides. You need 'ip directed-broadcast' enabled on the interface where the server sits if you are going to specify the subnet in your helper command.
