I have a cisco router that serves dhcp out to dsl customers ( mainly window machines). There are times that a customer will get lease an address, but will not be able to ping or repond to pings. The only thing I have noticed is that they will have AOL installed in the network protocols. My question is how do they receive an IP address when they can't even communicate. Does DHCP not involve tcp/ip or is this just a case of AOL highjacking the connection?

If you uninstall the AOL on that PC can it ping fine?? You need to get the output of "winipcfg" on that pc and see what ip address is allocated to the interface connected with dsl modem etc..
