digital mica modems on 3640

i have recently installed (i had no involvement in purchasing) a 3640 with primary e1 controllers and 2 modules of digital mica modems. users have been complaining of slow connections, upon investigation it seems that the modems are running as v34 with portware of 2.3.1.0. which does not support v90 standard.

On an identical 3640 (which is not yet in use and has no isdn connected to it) i have upgraded the portware to 2.5.1.0 which does support v90 (it is now set as so in s register - s29=6 v.90 modem standard) but if i try to set s30 to anything above 33000 it returns an error and when i do a show modem slot/port under type it shows unknown.

My question is do i have hardware that will not support v90 (the date on the module when i looked was 1996) or does upgrading the portware enable the hardware to support newer standards.

any help would be much appreciated

If they are Mica modems then you can upgrade the Mica Portware to a later release. Mica Portware 2.7.4.0 is backward compatible with IOS 11.2P through 12.x so should work OK with your system.

My modems are hardware ver 1 and we use pw 2.7.1.0 with them.

This runs on a 3640 with IOS 12.0(24)

SP ver 2710 - 6/9/1999.

MICA 0: HW Version 1.0, Serial Number 8574268.

MICA 1: HW Version 1.0, Serial Number 7533999.

MICA 2: HW Version 1.0, Serial Number 11034965.

MICA 3: HW Version 1.0, Serial Number 11737512.

MICA 4: Not Installed.

We get connection speeds of up to 50k although the majority does get that high as the counter show: (my aplogies for the garbled output)

Transmit Speed Counters:

Connection Speeds 31200 33600 42667 44000 45333 46667

# of connections 12 66 2 3 2 2

Connection Speeds 48000 49333 50000

# of connections 3 1 1

Receive Speed Counters:

Connection Speeds 24000 26400 28800 31200 33600

# of connections 1 2 8 7 74

In general you can say that it depends largely on the modem the client uses.
