You can probably use a hub. It depends on how the university assigns IP addresses. The hub will get you connectivity, but unless you can obtain a second IP address it won't let you do anything useful. You might be able to plug up and get a DHCP-leased address without any trouble. If they use static addressing (which would seem odd to me, but possible) you may have to ask for a second IP. You should probably ask even though hubs are dirt cheap.
