Do I need a router?

I have a single LAN port in my dorm room, and I have a desktop and a laptop. I wish to connect both to share the single LAN port connection. Do I need a router to do this, or is there a different way?

Re: Do I need a router?

You can probably use a hub. It depends on how the university assigns IP addresses. The hub will get you connectivity, but unless you can obtain a second IP address it won't let you do anything useful. You might be able to plug up and get a DHCP-leased address without any trouble. If they use static addressing (which would seem odd to me, but possible) you may have to ask for a second IP. You should probably ask even though hubs are dirt cheap.

Re: Do I need a router?

Option 1

Have the PC as your multihome box (need hub)

Software base. (if OS is MS than use ICS)

Option 2

Go buy a mini router (netgear)4port.

Hardware base. (recommended)

Goto ebay and buy one cheap price.
