hi,I'm running 2xCat4006 switches with Supervisor 3 module which are trunked 2gether. I have tried to span a Vlan (say vlan 100) via a port in one of the Cat4006 switche, say Switch1. However, I have noticed traffic within the same Vlan (vlan 100) running through Switch2, are not captured by the spanned port.
Am I to concur that spanning works soley on the vlan 100 within the physical Switch1, rather than across both Switch1 & 2 ?
Re: Does Spanning VLAN work between 2 Core Switches?
Yes, your conclusion is correct. Remember how a switch works: It sends frames to the port that it has learned to be connected to the host with the destination MAC address. If that destination port is in the same switch, as opposed to a trunk connection, the SPAN port on the second switch will never capture that frame, since that frame never entered that switch.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
