dsl a/d conversion???

When using a pots modem the data are transformed from digital to analog in order to go through the copper wire and then from analog to digital again (when they reach the other end).

Does the same happen with dsl modems too? If not, are the data in digital format the whole way around (from dsl cpe to dslam)?
