dsl

can anyone tell me how dsl works, does there have to be a lan ip and a wan ip ?

YOu can either use a DSL modem which will have a wan IP, and a lan ip to talk to computers on the inside. Most new modems are built in routers with DHCP and firewalling, so has a lan as well as wan ip. There is another mode of configuration for most DSL routers, where the DSL Modem acts as a bridge and you can still use another router or firewall (like pix) on the inside (lan side) and run PPPOE on the router or firewall to authenticate with the service provider and acquire an ip address (public). In this case the DSL modem usually dont carry an ip address (bridged mode).
