EC to different switch, is it supported?

Dear all,

I've 1 unit of Cat 2950 & 1 unit of Cat 3550. My customer wish to connect their server to have link redundancy by doing GEC with 1 link to each of the above mentioned switch. Is this supported by Cisco EtherChannel technology?

Thanks alot on your replies.

Regards.

Re: EC to different switch, is it supported?

The answer is NO.

All ports in an Etherchannel have to reside on the same switch.

If it is possible with the type of GigaEth-adapters you use, you could configure hot-standby or failover mode instead. Your server will then keep one port inactive until the keepalives from the other port are no longer observed on the network. This is configured on the server. You just need to attach the two ports to the same VLAN on both switches.
