Can anyone tell me what etherchannle is and why we would use it.

Hi

Its very much similar to L3 Multilink bundle but here its done with L2 links.

Bundling 2 or more L2 links and forming a port channel or etherchannel to have the resultant bandwidth of both the L2 links.

you got to have 2 protocols like LACP and PAGP which u can configure up under this port channel.

with port channel or etherchannel in place u will have reduandcy backed up with the links as well as load balacing taken care by that.

In recent times i get to know about configuring L3 etherchannels too which i have seen in Cat6k boxes..

Hi there,

Etherchannel is the bundling of several ethernet-connections into a single connection. It is used to increase the available bandwidth between two devices.

For a company with two 10/100 switches and no gigabit, it's a cheap and quick solution to increase it's bandwidth between these devices.. just bundle more links and achieve the bandwidth you want (within the limits of the switches and technology).
