Ethernet Controller Addresses debugging results

After enabling 'debug ethernet-controller addesses' on a Catalyst 3500 XL switch, the log shows multiple add and delete addresses similar to the following:

Add Address [MAC], on port 54 vlan 1

Delete Address [MAC], on port 54 vlan 1

The MAC addresses are all different. I used the 'show spanning-tree interface' command to determine that port 54 is actually interface 0/38 on the switch. The interface is down, and is not used for anything special.

What would be causing this activity? Has anyone encountered this?

Re: Ethernet Controller Addresses debugging results

This error message signifies that a MAC address is moving consistently between different ports.

This error message is only applicable on the Catalyst 2900 XL and 3500 XL switches. But since the port which is showing in the messah=ge has nothing conected to it, I think it could be some issue with the IOS also. Try upgrading the IOS and see it it works.

I see these messages occurring with high frequency, what impact do these messages have on the switch/network? You mentioned upgrading the IOS - is this a known bug?
