Extensions to the Interface table.

What are the rules for a device to begin using the High Capacity counters in the extension table? Does anyone know if Catalyst swiches support the ifAlias variable? Are there known issues with this?

Re: Extensions to the Interface table.

In order to use HC counters you must use 64-bit objects like ifHCInOctets etc and use SNMPv2c or v3 for the polling. As for your other question, see the section 'Which Cisco Devices Implement 64-bit SNMP Counters' at:

Re: Extensions to the Interface table.

Thank you for your answer and pointer. Very helpful.

It looks like the MIB variable ifAlias, which is in the extensions table, is just not supported by any of the Catalyst 6509s that we have. It is supported by the routers here. Any idea why (if it's a standard I would think it should be there)? The administrators that I'm working with are using portName in the Port Table instead, which introduces a whole new set of issues (i.e. indexed by module#, port# for one).
