External Copact Flash

Hi All,

I just have one question related to external compact flash, what is used for (is it considered an external RAM or external OS storage)? What are the cases which I usually require the use of external flash in?

Thanks,

Haitham

Re: External Copact Flash

Hi Haitham,

External compact flash is solely used as a storage medium. On some platforms, such as the cat6500, some of the IOS images are larger than bootflash capacity, so the image must be booted off of an external flashcard. They can also be used to dump crashinfo files, store backup configs, multiple images, as a backup to potential bootflash failures, and any other potential storage needs.

Additionally, it's much easier to recover a device with a missing or corrupted image using a flash card than having to use the x-modem procedure.

HTH,

Bobby
