Flash space not free after format

Hello,

I just received a 1812 model unit flash memory C class.

I cannot free the space from CF; after format, I receive the same amount of space:

Cisco-1812-II#show flash:

14450688 bytes available (17489920 bytes used)

Cisco-1812-II#format flash:

Format operation may take a while. Continue? [confirm]

Format operation will destroy all data in "flash:".  Continue? [confirm]

Format: Drive communication & 1st Sector Write OK...

Writing Monlib sectors.

.................................................................................................

Monlib write complete

.

Format: All system sectors written. OK...

Format: Total sectors in formatted partition: 62583

Format: Total bytes in formatted partition: 32042496

Format: Operation completed successfully.

Format of flash complete

Cisco-1812-II#show flash:

14450688 bytes available (17489920 bytes used)

I believe it's hidden somehow, but no luck until now. I checked secure bootset; any other ideas?

Cisco-1812-II#show secure bootset

%IOS image and configuration resilience is not active

Here is also detailed flash:

Cisco-1812-II#show flash: all

Destination filename [c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin]?

Accessing tftp://172.20.20.16/c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin...

Loading c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin from 172.20.20.16 (via Vlan16): !

%Error copying tftp://172.20.20.16/c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin (Not enough space on device)

Any thoughts?

Re: Flash space not free after format

Hello,

squeeze command is available only for Class B, flash cards; mine is Class C, so it doesn't work.

Thanks for your try!

Re: Flash space not free after format

I hope you have a multi-card reader you can borrow because it looks like this is the only way.

I have never seen a behaviour like this before.   So I'm not sure whether you have a CF failure, an IOS bug.

Re: Flash space not free after format

Ok, I thought of this from the beginning, just hoped I could do it from IOS.

As I inserted the CF, there were 3 hidden files. Now comes the question: how can you hide a file on Cisco flash?

In the end I format it and things went back to normal.

Many thanks guys for the support!

L.E. I believe this was related to IOS resiliency, but as I stated before:

#show secure bootset

%IOS image and configuration resilience is not active

A bug maybe?

show secure ?

bootset  Display information about secured image and configuration files

Re: Flash space not free after format

Hi Florin,

Good to know that you have identified the rootcause. Great. This is a good information for me as well.

Yes. It might be an resilent confguration done on that device. It is a hidden conf and ios that is stored in a secured way.
