We are upgrading our Cisco 2600 Routers flash from 8mb to 16mb for Voice over IP.
We put in the flash and power up the router and after the bootstrap loads it says:
device does not contain a valid magic number
boot: boot cannot open "flash"
boot cannot determine first file name on device "flash"
what could be wrong...?

You have pre-XM 2600 routers.
There is no on-board flash built-in to these devices so you will boot into Rommon.
You will need connection to a tftp server and an IOS image.
Enter the following, substituting the relevant IP's, masks and filename.
IP_ADDRESS=193.115.12.219
IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY=193.115.12.51
TFTP_SERVER=193.115.12.69
TFTP_FILE=c2600-i-mz.122-6h.bin
Now issue the command tftpdnld and confirm the prompts that follow.
This will tftp the specified image to the flash with an erase of the flash.
It is best to do all this with a directly connected laptop running the tftp server.
See the following link for more info.
