full 3548XL non layer3

dear forum,

i'm experiencing performance problem in catalyst switch. when i try to show them that our cisco switching performance.

before implementing the Catalyst they're using 10baseT hub (3com) in their network infrastructure. the network have about 100 clients total.

the net admins said that their performance was actually degraded after using cisco switch.

i try to test the network using my comp, and my partner's using some simple ftp download, and what's up GOLD (throughput).

the average bandwidth difference when i'm using the hub (10BaseT) and when i'm using switch is almost same

(approx 1027 Kb/s)

do you have anything to suggest ? what might went wrong in my configuration ?

FYI i havent setup anything at all on the switch, its all still in default factory setting.

thanks a lot.

AS it is usually the case, you need to make sure the speed/duplex matches on a connection to the switch. With a hub, it can only do 10/half (in your case) and if the PCs are hard coded for 10/half on their side. Now you haven't configured anything on cisco switch, it is auto-negotiating and hence would default to 100/half. There will be errors. You need make sure both sides of the link are hard-coded correctly or auto-negotiating correctly.

Re: full 3548XL non layer3

in these network there's a novell environment

as well as 2000 and UNIX environment too.

on the novell client's port i have to use "port fast" mode if i didn't enable port fast feature the novell client cannot connect to the server

i wondering what is the problem gonna show up if i enable all the portfast on all client's and server's port ?

i'm quite new in this catalyst stuff. do you have any advice for me ?

Re: full 3548XL non layer3

As indicated before , most of your devices were on a hub and should have been hardcoded to 10/half on the clients nics . If they did not change these , then the Catalyst ports would all have to be hardcoded to 10/half or 100/half . You can not auto on one end and hardcode the other end this creates errors , retransmissions and general poor performance . All ports on the Catalyst not connected to another switch or router should have portfast enabled and channeling and trunking off . On Catalyst code 5.X and above this can be accomplished by the set port host 2/1-24,3/1-24 etc... command for every user port . If you decide you want to have your clients set as auto negotiate then all Catalyst ports would have to be set as auto also . Full duplex connections are always preferred over half as this basically doubles your bandwidth and eliminates collisions on the ports . simple rule of thumb switch--hardcoded---> nic hardcoded , switch set as auto----> nic set as auto .
