Will a LX GBIC in a Cat3548 operate over single mode fiber?

Yes, LX GBIC will work on smf upto 10 kms & ZX GBIC will work on smf upto 70 Kms. Cat3548 support both LX & ZX GBIC. Be sure to attenuate with ZX & smf on shorter cable runs.
