Hi, long time reader first time poster desparate for a bit of advice

Stuck on an issue when trunking between Cat5509 and Cat4507R. ISL trunk, both sides set to on, full duplex, 100 Mb, same native vlan. Getting the following output on the Cat4507r:

FastEthernet3/1 is up, line protocol is up (connected)

Hardware is Fast Ethernet Port, address is 000b.be6d.af40 (bia 000b.be6d.af40)

Description: UTP/Fibre link to CARSWC2

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,

reliability 249/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

Full-duplex, 100Mb/s

input flow-control is off, output flow-control is off

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:00, output never, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never

Input queue: 0/2000/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)

5 minute input rate 117000 bits/sec, 40 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 4000 bits/sec, 4 packets/sec

92728 packets input, 31405768 bytes, 0 no buffer

Received 92728 broadcasts (0 multicast)

0 runts, 8647 giants, 0 throttles

8647 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

13823 packets output, 2350122 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 0 interface resets

Giants = input errors. I can't work out why this is happening! I'm unable to change MTU size on 100Mb interface.

In case it's any use, the 5509 side displays the following:

Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

It may also be worth noting that there is a fibre/ethernet media convertor between the 2 switches. The Cat 5509 port is FX, Cat 4507R port is TX.

A couple of questions:

For how long are you having this problems?, if recently what where your last changes?

Input error usually means physical error. Did you check your physical media already?

I also saw in your post that the amount of giant packets actually correspond to the amount of broadcast. Have used a Proto analyzer in order to see what's the BCast all about?

Hope you reply in order to help u!!!
