Re: gig ports on 3550

3550 gig ports require a GBIC to connect to a fiber patch cable.

(you must confirm which type of fiber connector your cables have; common is SC type)

cisco part numbers for common GBICs are as follows:

ws-g5483 : copper 1000 BaseT gbic; cat 5+, upto 100 meters

ws-g5484 : shortWave SX fiber GBIC; upto 550 meters

ws-g5486 : longWave LX/LH fiber GBIC; upto 10k meters

ws-g5487 : extendedDistance ZX GBIC; upto 100km

Re: gig ports on 3550

i was reading up on the gbic connector and came across this line "Catalyst 3550 series switches support both 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports and fixed GBIC-based Gigabit module slots". does this mean the ethernet ports can configured to operate at 1 gig with out addition hardware?

thanks,

Gold

Re: gig ports on 3550

depends on the model. The 12 port ones do. The 24 and 48 port ones do not
