Gigabit module WS-X5403 cannot come online on switch Cat5513

The catalyst 5513 with the Supervior II can not identify the Gigabitethernet Module WS-X5403.

The CatOS version is 5.5(16).Cisco web indicates that the version can SUPPORT the WS-X5403 module, but actually the module never be identified by the supervisor and what is more that there is a system message in the console window showing "Module 2 is supervisor module". What is the reason? Any points have I ignored?

I tried to insert the WS-X5403 module into module 2,4,5 three different slots. But it displays "Module 2 (or 4,5) is supervisor module" and can not be identifid by the Catalyst 5513.

I also tried different software version of cat5000-sup.5-5-19.bin (5-5-16,5-5-14,5-5-4a,5-2-7a),no one selection can resolve the problem!

But Cisco web those version can all SUPPORT the module. What is the reason?

The show mod and show ver as following with versioin 5-5-19:

Hello,

do you get any LEDs on the WS-X5403 when you insert it ? The card is indeed supported with the SUPII, just not in slot 9-12.

You might have a faulty module.

Regards,

GP

Hi,gpauwen:

Thanks for answer me!

It's right the module "WS-X5403".

The LED turns green in half a second when inserted, then it turns orange. For a while the console displays with the message "Module 2 is supervisor module".

The module maybe be a module with problem. But it's a new module. The possibility seems very little!

And one fact discribed in Cisco website is that only one port will be active with the other two inactive running under the supervisor II even though the module functions properly. Does it mean that the other two Gigabit port will be wasted unless the supervisor upgraded to Supervisor III?

The two questions really bother me!

Any more information can be helpful, remind me please!

Thanks again!

please post the exact log message(s) produced from the supervisor after the ws-x5403 is inserted. also post the "show mod" and "show env all" output produced after inserting the ws-x5403 and indicate which slot the card is in.

I am not on site now.

The information "show mod" is as before.

I can't excute the "show env all" command now.

What is displayed as I inserted the WS-X5403 module is the following according to my memory:

Module 2 is supervisor module.

%MSG-X-XXX: Module 2 failed to download code from supervisor module.

%MSG-X-XXX: Module 2 failed to come online.

But I can't remember the exact information now for I didn't capture the information as I was operating the module.

Does this information can help?

Has any case like this happened?

The show version output doesn't make sense based on what you are saying. It says the module in slot2 is a WS-X5225R, not a ws-x5403 ? Module 2 based on the show version is not the supervisor module. That is in slot 1 ( ws-x5509 ).

Please clarify the situation.

oh,I forgot to mention the following:

I inserted the module in different slots.(slot2,4 and 5).The above information is not the one I inserted the module in slot 2,probably in slot 4.

But it is the same that the module WS-X5403 cannot be identified when I inserted the module in slot 2.

since the sup can't bring it online, sounds like a bad module. talk to the person who sold you the module.

I agree with you!

Two possibilities:

BAD module or CatOS with BUG

The former is greater than the latter

I will check it once again

Thanks a lot!!!
