GSR 12008 6 port DS3-SMB line card has problems talking to ADTRAN T3/T1 MUX

Scenario:

What I’m trying to do is setup a layer1 to layer 3 connectivity between 1600 T1 router and GSR DS3 line card (6DS3-SMB line card – 6 port packet over DS3) using ADTRAN mx2800 MUX (T3 to T1 MUX) in between.

Here is the Cisco link for line card

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/core/cis12000/linecard/lc_chan/6587ds3.htm#30706

This ADTRAN MUX splits one DS3 line into 28 DS1 lines.

1600 T1 router <---------->ADTRAN MUX (T1 to T3)<---------------->GSR DS3 line card

Problem:

ADTRAN mux is reporting CAIS error (Carrier side AIS error) on GSR switch. For some reason GSR switch is not sending frames properly to MUX. According to ADTRAN manual and tech support guys, CAIS error is – “The T1 side is receiving all ones from the DS3 side of the network”, which is a GSR line card.

When I setup the MUX for digital and line loop-back, the CKT comes up right away. I'm very positive that there is a problem on GSR switch. I really don’t know what the problem is. There is nothing much to configure on GSR also. All I need is a ping from 1600 router to GSR line card.

Framing on GSR is set to C-bit (also tried for M13)

Used internal clock. (also tried supplying clock from ADTRAN MUX)

Framing on T1 router is set to ESF

Linecode is B8ZS

Used internal clock

In between, MUX will terminate the clock for both DS1 line and DS3 line. So MUX is not generating any clock for DS1 or DS3 network.

This is all I have configured on these 3 boxes.

I need to know if there is anything extra I have to configure on GSR side. I’m attaching related output below (concentrate only on serial 4/1 port).

Any inputs are appreciated and thanks in advance.

Bad news. The link you sent describes a packet-over-DS3 interface. This interface will not work with the multiplexer. The multiplexer will attempt to break the DS3 down to 28 T1s. This is called "channelization". However, this Cisco DS3 interface is not channelized, so the T1 that is being passed from the 1600 to the multiplexer is not usable by the DS3 GSR interface. To use a T1 that is multiplexed in a DS3, you will need a channelized DS3 GSR interface. I know this exists for the 7500 series, but I don't know about the GSR series.

I'm just the messenger...

Mark,

Thanks for replying. There is a line card available for GSR called 6CT3-SMB

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/core/cis12000/linecard/lc_chan/10318ct3.htm

Will this serve my purpose?

Please let me know.
