Is it beneficial to hard code a Switch port to a server?

Setting the switch port to 100Mb and Server to 100Mb instead of Auto-Negogiating

Its generally a good idea to do that. It will avoid any incompatibilities b/n multi vendor nics and the switch.

What incompatibilities could you see by setting the Switch and card to Auto?

I am trying to explain this to a network admin.
