Hi,

am trying to configure HSRP.Currently am using 4 switches ,2 Nos -6509,2 Nos-6513.Trunking is enabled between the 6513 switches, also the trunking is enabled between each of 6509 and 6513..

HSRP is enabled on 6509 switches.i have connected PCs to the switches. But when i ping from end to the other, its not successful.Should i have to give the standy ip address as the default gateway in the PCs.

PC1 6509 6509 PC2

6513 6513

any assistance would be appreciated...

Thanks

Hello

The IP Address you provide with the standby command should be the

Default Gateway Address on your PC's.

Do also a clearing of the arp caches.....i could be that you still have old

entries in the caches.

Regards

Roger

Hello Roger,

Thanks for your suggestion.I need to clear one more point on "show standy " command.

When i see the "show standby"command output in the active router,

Router#sh standby

Active router is local

Standby router is x.x.x.x expired

x- denotes the IP address, but the IP address shown is the active routers IP address.actually stnady routers IP address must be displayed.

any idea.

Thanks well in advance..

With HSRP, you do use the standby IP Address for your computer gateways. The Standby IP Address is the only IP Address that the HSRP devices all listen to for failover.

You're right. Typically, the standby router's IP should

be displayed or when the peer is not recognized, it

usually shows "Standby router is unknown expired".

The problem might be affected by the HSRP timers.

Hi

Thats correct you should see the hsrp neighbors address. It should look about like this:

Router#sh standby

FastEthernet0/0 - Group 101

Local state is Active, priority 100, may preempt

Hellotime 3 sec, holdtime 10 sec

Next hello sent in 0.416

Virtual IP address is 10.46.7.1 configured

Active router is local

Standby router is 10.46.7.3 expires in 8.024

Virtual mac address is 0000.0c07.ac65

53 state changes, last state change 2w1d

IP redundancy name is "hsrp-Fa0/0-101" (default)

Priority tracking 1 interface, 1 up:

Interface Decrement State

ATM2/0.2004 10 Up

Anyway do use a group like in the sample above the group 101. You could also implement it without a group.

As somebody also has writen it could be also a timer or authentication issue.

Hope that helps you.

Roger
