Helper address configuration for NIS broadcast

Hi,

We were configuring IP helper address feature along with forward-protocol, to carry NIS client broadcast to servers in different VLANs. This was working fine for DHCP, but not working for NIS broadcast (UDP-111). We found that the packets broadcast by the clinets have TTL=1. Suspect this is the root cause.

Has anybody come across such issue? Is there any workaround? We know static configuration in clients to send unicasts to the server is one solution, but thats not what the customer wants.

Adjust the TTL to a higher number such as 64 perhaps to test. You also wanted to make sure that when the broadcast is seen on the sniffer outputs, the layer 2 address is seen as ffff.ffff.ffff and on the layer 3 would be the be the correct broadcast ip address.
