If you have spanning tree enabled and portfast disabled it will take approx 50 seconds to change from half to full duplex assuming that you lose carrier, this 50 seconds is due to spanning tree blocking / listening / learning / forward cycle ( 2 x forwarding delay + max age).
If portfast is enabled the change should be nearly instant as this transitions the port straight to forwarding bypassing the blocking / listening / learning stages.
