High CPU Utilization on the 5509

The RSM CPU utilization on the 5509 Catalyst switch was running very high at all time between 60% and 99% I checked everything that I can think of.

Please advice me with steps that I can follow to isolate the problem. I included show ver to define the IOS ver and the mem size.

You can offload the RSM workload by enabling the MLS and the CEF.

I have faced the same problem on the 6509 and drop down to 5% immediately after I enabled the MLS.

I appreciate your respond. I found out that the 55009 Catalyst doesn’t have the NetFlow Feature Card installed in the Supervisor III mod, I thought that the MLS dose not work with out having the NetFlow Feature Card is that right?

The CEF was enabled on the interfaces and Globally.

Is there any particular process hogging most of the CPU?

Do a show proc cpu and see what is driving the cpu . then do a show interface and see if any particular port or vlan has high utilization . It's possible that you may have a virus if this is something that just popped up . You could try turning on ip cache flow on the interfaces and see if their is a particular address that is showing up a lot and going to many different ip addresses . This is the version that we are running on our Cat5000 RSM's without a problem . CEF should be on by default in this version . Make sure mls is also on , this helps a lot on the CPU as only the first packet hit's the cpu in a flow then all following packets are switched in hardware .

The 5509 Catalyst doesn’t have the NetFlow Feature Card installed in the Supervisor III G mods.

I have 2 Supervisor III G in each cat. Do I need 2 NetFlow Feature Card for each Supervisor III G mods?
