host mask

I can assign a host mask of 255.255.255.255 to a loopback interface , but not with ethernet or any serial interface.

Re: host mask

I think its due to the design of the IOS software. Look at it like this. Loopback interface is a software only interface. Ethernet, serial etc are physical interfaces. Obviously on ethernet or serial you will connect multiple hosts (ethernet) or one more host (serial), which would mean you should be assigning atleast a minimum mask of /30 (2 hosts) and not /32. It doesnt make sense applying a /32 mask to ethernet or serial interface were more than 1 hosts (routers) will be connected.

Hope that explains..
